Artist Intention, has been the subject of heated debate between collectors, artists, students and academics for many years. This research document by artist Des Kilfeather is one of the results of a year long collaboration with Pallant House Gallery in the UK; exploring the inspiration behind Victor Willing’s painting Night and Francis Bacon’s painting Two Figures and their relationship with Carl Jung and the Unconscious Self.
Kilfeather's research into Victor Willing and any possible artistic influences of his wife Paula Rego and friend Francis Bacon drove him into a head on collision with the psychology of Carl Jung. As a reported Jung follower, Willing’s painting, Night, was strongly documented as coming from his dreams. Somewhat phased by this suggestion and his own perception of intentionality, Kilfeather decided to undertake a top level exploration of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, alternative aesthetics and semiotics within the context of artist intention.
This eBook contains Kilfeather's audio text script with a selection of digital and intaglio prints made in response to his research and ongoing exploration of Aristotle and James Joyce.

Des Kilfeather is new to me. He has a fascinating bio that includes truancy, fleeing Ireland for England as a teenager, and living on London streets. As I read this eBook I wondered, with such an unpromising start in life, how did he turn out so well? Here Des writes about his research into the question, do an artist's unconscious intentions overrule the conscious ones? In other words, does an artist's work mean what we say it means? It's a fascinating question. Des makes use of his evolving series, "Introibo Ad Altars Dei (I Go to the Altar of God)," which includes, in part, intaglio prints pairing the Pope and the Queen of England holding hands in various settings in England and elsewhere. He references the work of Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, James Joyce, and artists Victor Willing, Paula Rego, and Francis Bacon in pursuit of an answer. Of course, this is an impossible question that can never be resolved (Des admits as much) but somehow I can't help but admire him for undertaking the journey. His book is a thought-provoking read as you follow along. Personally I would have liked to learn more about how he went from truant to scholar and artist, but he may already have written that story.Product details
